It's not a OSU game day, but we can watch Notre Dame and Navy start the season, albeit overseas, in rainy Dublin. It's football.
Later, Beavers can watch next week's opponent, San Jose St., take on USC in the LA Coliseum. And though Oregon State probably will never play there again, they could also face the Trojans one last time, if both teams make it to Las Vegas for the final Pac-12 game, championship or otherwise. It's not an outlandish possibility.
Deft use of the remote or recording technology also allows the opportunity to scout San Diego St., Oregon State's opponent in just 3 weeks (and possibly quite a few more time in times to come), as the Aztecs start their season, in a place the Beavers will probably see sometime soon, against the Ohio Bobcats. It's expected to be a competitive, entertaining game, not something that's that common in week zero.
But whichever game(s) you watch, its football. With fans and bands. On the field, where regardless of politics and off-field drama, if you make enough plays, you win. And no one is eliminated from anything yet.
The prospects of this year's realignment, just the precursor of MUCH more next season, and disrupted tv and travel the likes of which no one has ever seen, will hang over every game played today and this season.
But still, it is Game Day. The best day of the week, and the best days of the year. Its why we care about all the off-field stuff, because it affects the on-field stuff. But once the game starts, only the on-field stuff matters. For a few hours at least.
So enjoy Game Day again!
